Canopy beds date back to the medieval era, and they were primarily used for practicality and privacy protection. In those times, lords and noblemen had people that attended to their needs, and they often slept in the same room. In addition to privacy, canopy beds provided extra warmth. Because their main purpose was not to look beautiful, they were mostly pretty simple and plain. Later, around the 16th century, they became decorative and fancier. The headboard and posts were carved and engraved, and nicer fabrics were used for  the canopy.
