The Most Common Kitchen Sink Plumbing Problems

When it comes to kitchen sinks, they are notorious for having plumbing problems. The fact that we use our sinks multiple times per day adds to the wear and tear of the plumbing fixtures. Drains are not overly complicated, but there are some critical aspects to them. Most people are not aware of how the plumbing works in and around your sink. The issue they are experiencing could be as simple as a worn-out washer or more serious like a broken pipe. Below we look at the most common plumbing problems related to your kitchen sink.

Billy Henley, the Vice President of BHI Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning in Corona, explains, “The plumbing in your house should be maintained regularly. Preventive care can save a homeowner on costly repairs down the road.”

Low Water Pressure

Is the water barely trickling out of your sink faucet? This can happen for several reasons, but one of the most common reasons is a faulty pressure regulator. Another cause is a buildup of calcium and hard minerals, which can clog the faucet and reduce the water pressure.

Clogged Kitchen Sink

A clog in your kitchen sink can happen for several reasons. What most people don’t realize is that the products they dumb down their sinks can cause significant damage down the road. Over time things like grease, soap, dirt, and household products get built up in your drains.

There are a few things you can do that can help keep the pipes clean. Every few years, you can have your drains jetted. Jetting uses high power water to remove the buildup and help open the pipes back up.

Kitchen Faucet

The faucets ion your home will last a long time. Except if you have a high water pressure or hard water. Many people think high water pressure is a good thing. Water shooting out at a more top speed is great for showers and cleaning dishes. However, your faucets, water heater, and other plumbing fixtures will wear out faster. The washers and other connectors that tie into the plumbing fixtures are meant to withstand water pressure of 45-80 PSI.

Garbage Disposal

Having a garbage disposal issue happens. If the garbage disposal is old, there are internal parts that will eventually wear out. Often the problem is from the disposal taking on more than it can handle. Unaware that the units can’t handle the work, consumers put pasta, grease, nuts, cereal, and all other foods down the sink, thinking the disposal will handle it all.

Garbage disposals are meant to handle minimal amounts of food leftovers. Your family should make an effort to place as much food waste in the actual garbage and not down the sink. This will help your drains as well as your garbage disposal to keep working as intended.

When most people experience a plumbing problem, it is often in the kitchen. The above issues are the most common problems you may encounter in a kitchen but aren’t all. If you are looking to ensure you have no future issues, you can get a plumbing inspection from your local plumber.
